- Theres a canadian company that makes the one CBS has been using for
- the past 8 or 9 years, a fairly stable device. It looks like a
- very large modem, has i/o of std ntsc composite format (I assume they
- also have a PAL version), controlled by defaults via internal dip
- switches as to what 'page' etc it receives. I believe it can also be
- controlled via a terminal attached to an rs-232 port, data output can
- be seriel at a selection of baud rates, or to a printer port
- (parallel). Not sure as to the present pricing. Guessing 1-2k$ US.
-
- CBS is in the middle of adding another station identification related
- service, using what I would assume are newer versions of it, but I
- haven't eyeballed the new unit yet. I thought they might use an
- American unit this time but apparently its still the best in their
- opinion. I have trouble getting them repaired, the local shippers
- refuse to screw with all the customs papers, so I ship it to CBS and
- they send it to Ottawa to get fixed. With 2 units here now, thats
- only been twice in 9 years, not half bad IMHO. Your being Aussie
- might actually help in that regard!
-
- Our major, and not very often problem, is that with a dirty input,
- the comm software gets so far out in la-la land that the front panel
- reset doesn't, and to restore operation I have to unplug its power
- supply cable for a second to reset it. It might be seeing an illegal
- page number or some such, usually happens during the twice annual
- satellite sunspot outages when the suns noise overpowers Galaxy 7.
-
- The device is called a "NORPACK" decoder, but the company name slips
- my mind. I'll try and look it up at work and append it to a followup
- msg.
